Energy potential of sugar cane biomass in Brazil Scientia Agricola
Rípoli,Tomaz Caetano Cannavam; Molina Jr.,Walter Francisco; Rípoli,Marco Lorenzzo Cunali.
Brazil is a developing tropical country with abundant biomass resources. Sugar cane (Saccahrum spp.) is primarily produced to obtain sugar and alcohol. Presently sugar cane is burned before harvest. If the cane were not burned before harvest, the trash (tops and leaves) could be collected and burned to produce steam to generate electricity, or be converted into alcohol fuel and decrease the severe air pollution problems caused by sugar cane burning. Based upon logical assumptions and appropriate data, we estimate the number of people that could be served each year by this biomass if its energy was converted into electricity. From trash and bagasse, 7.0x10(6) and 5.5x10(6) people y-1 could be served, respectively.

Enhanced biosynthesis of quercetin occurs as A photoprotective measure in Lycopersicon esculentum mill. under Acute UV-B exposure BABT
Shourie,Abhilasha; Tomar,Pushpa; Srivastava,Deepika; Chauhan,Rahul.
Lycopersicon esculentum respond to UV-B by enhanced synthesis of flavonoid quercetin, a strong antioxidant that helps the plants to well acclimatize to UV-B stress. Three weeks old plants of L. esculentum were subjected to acute UV-B irradiation for 20, 40 and 60 minutes daily until 28 days and analyzed for the morphological and biochemical changes. UV-B exposure for 40 and 60 minutes considerably affected the growth and biomass of L. esculentum. The leaves were deformed, developed chlorosis and abscised early as compared to the unexposed plants. Biomass declined by 35% and total chlorophyll decreased by 24.7% due to disintegration of chloroplasts. Enhancement was seen in the content of carotenoids, anthocyanins and total flavonoids by 15, 33.3 and 22.8%,...

Establishment of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu, under levels of soil water availability in stages of growth of the plants R. Bras. Zootec.
Araujo,Leandro Coelho de; Santos,Patrícia Menezes; Mendonça,Fernando Campos; Mourão,Gerson Barreto.
The objective of this work was to evaluate yield traits and development of palisadegrass under the influence of water deficit during the establishment period. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse, in a completely random block statistical design in a factorial arrangement and additional treatment (3 × 3 + 1). The treatments referred to the suppression of irrigation at different phases of the establishment (sowing, germination and initial tillerring) until the soil presented water content of 75%, 50%, and 25% of the moisture related to field capacity (qFC), besides control treatment with no water restriction. Evaluations of number of grown tillers per vase, green leaves per tiller and plant height were carried out weekly, for five weeks after the...

Hidalgo Rodríguez, G.; Areces Mallea, A..
The Gulf of Batabano is an important region of the Cuban shelf, which environmental conditions are aim of several ecological assessments. In order to contribute to the characterization of their benthic communities, the structure of the macrofauna in sediments of this shallow-water ecosystem was determined. Higher diversity and abundance of macrofauna were registered in sandy and mixed with vegetation substrates, mainly dominated by polychaetes and crustaceans. Biomasses did not show a particular distributional pattern. The observed increases of densities and biomasses in November could be associated to a regular seasonal variation.

Patagonian scallop (Zygochlamys patagonica King & Broderip, 1832): A new fishery in the Argentine continental shelf. Yield-per-recruit model was applied to the stock of castañeta (Cheilodactylus bergi)in the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (Southwest Atlantic, among 34° and 39°30' S), in order to estimate the range of F0.1 values resulting from the uncertainty in the parameters of the model. Simulations with variations in natural mortality and recruitment were carried out, in order to estimate the risk of overfishing associated with different fishing mortality levels. The criterion that spawning stock biomass be mantained over 35. of its unexploited level was adopted. For an optimum age of first capture of 4 years, the range of calculated F0.1...

Estimates of carbon flow through bacteriplankton in the S. Benguela upwelling region based on 3H-thymidine incorporation and predator-free incubations. ArchiMer
Lucas, M; Painting, S; Muir, D.
Spatial and temporal estimates of bacterial numbers, biomass, activity and production were measured in the S. Benguela upwelling system during the course of a phytoplankton bloom. Bacterial numbers and biomass were highest in the euphotic zone and correlated closely with particulate carbon in the water column rather than with chlorophyll a concentrations. 3H-Thymidine incorporation gave good estimates of production. Differential utilisation of photosynthetic exudates and detrital POC by bacterioplankton during the course of a bloom might account for the varying significance ascribed to exudates and POC as a source of carbon for bacterial production.

Estimating the bioenergy potential of Pinus radiata plantations in Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Acuña,Eduardo; Espinosa,Miguel; Cancino,Jorge; Rubilar,Rafael; Muñoz,Fernando.
The bioenergy potential for electricity and ethanol production of Pinus radiata D. Don plantations in Chile was modeled, on a regional basis, using radiata pine plantations areas by age class. Wood basic density equations based on age and growing region, wood moisture content variability, and the effciency of a hypothetical power plant were used to estimate the amount of electricity produced by biomass at harvesting age including logging residues. Bioethanol yield was estimated at 275 L t-1 of dry biomass. The uncertainty of the bioenergy production were analyzed using probabilistic distribution functions and an estimate of 1.83 million ha-1 of radiata pine plantations by year 2030. Parameters considered for the uncertainty analyses included the rotation...

ArchiMer
Maurer, Daniele; Borel, Michel; Dreno, Jean-paul.

Dardignac-corbeil, Marie-jose.
The biomass of the cultivated mussels has been estimated every year in the Pertuis Breton dulring the period 1988-1993. The method used is first recalled, then the question of the biomass trends during spring -i.e. during the sampling period- is discussed. Based on the results, it appears that the mussel volume starts decreasing in 1990 to reach a minimum in 1991. A slight increase is observed in 1992 but no further improvement in 1993. The factors possibly related to this evolution are finally discussed.

Gerard, Denis.
The quantity of mussels cultivated on wooden poles called « bouchots », in Mont Saint-Michel bay, has been estimated in april 2002, by volume, number and weight. To do so, a sampling strategy has been conceived, operated and then optimized, taking into account the spatial distribution of this stock and the material and human constraints (especially the amount of persons and working days available). The sampling plan uses procedures of stratification, degrees, regression, so as to reach the optimum precision related to cost. The operation took a great advantage of the efficient help of mussel farmers. During the first day, the task consisted to estimate the number and position of poles occupied by mussels, with the help of 5 persons on boat. The following 2...
